Just because you do not see mold growing in your home, this does not mean you don't have it. This is because mold can sometimes hide in places that you cannot see. Below are three of these places, as well as what you can do to get rid of it.
If your home has a chimney and the chimney cap is rusted, water will come through the cap and into the chimney. This creates a damp environment, and because it is also dark, mold will start to grow. Check your chimney cap, and if you see even a little rust, replace it with a new one. Check it on a regular basis so you know when rust is forming. If you find mold in the chimney, you will need to contact a chimney sweep to clean it for you.
Refrigerator Drip Pans
Another place you may not think to look is your refrigerator drip pan. This is because this pan often collects food spills and moisture. If there is mold here, put one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide into one cup of water and put it into a spray bottle. Spray the area thoroughly, and let it sit for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. After this time, use a damp cloth to scrub the mold. Make it your routine to clean the drip pan at least once a year. Don't forget to check the floor beneath the drip pan, as you may find mold there also.
There could be mold hiding in the crawlspace under your home. This is because the crawlspace is hot, moist, and dark so even if you have proper ventilation, mold can still grow and accumulate over a period of time. If you find mold here, you first need to assess the damage. First put on protective clothing including a face mask and goggles. Also wear long pants and a shirt with a hood to protect your head.
You have to have proper ventilation while you are in the crawl space, as mold spores will float in the air. Set up fans in the vents and around the crawlspace. Put a plastic sheet on the ground where you will be cleaning the mold so the mold will fall onto this and not onto the floor. Purchase a spray chemical that is made to remove mold. Follow the directions for the product that you purchase on how to use it.
If you find a lot of mold in your crawl space, you should hire a professional to clean it for you. Check your crawl space yearly to stay on top of this problem.
